I sincerely believe that it is far more beneficial and far less costly to help a child build confidence than it is to fix an adult who has little or none.

Mind mapping

Have you ever tried mind mapping?  Do you even know what this term means?   A mind map is a diagram that is used organize information.  It is a powerful way to brainstorm your thoughts and put them down on paper so you can see things more clearly.   Mind maps can be used by individuals or by groups that are trying to develop ideas.  A central concept is created from which ideas flow in the form of words, phrases and images.

Mind maps can be very helpful in planning events, creating habits, reaching a goal, solving problems and learning a new task.  They give you an overview of the situation and a breakdown of everything needed.

How do you start mind mapping?  There is no standard way.  You just have to put your thoughts and ideas down on paper using circles, squares, lines and any other kind of shape you wish.  The idea is to write down everything you need to reach a goal or solve a problem.  Here are some simple suggestions:

  1. Get a large piece of paper and coloured markers.  Or you can use a white-board or flip-chart depending on the situation.mind maps
  2. Draw a big circle in the center and draw a picture or write down the goal to reach or problem to solve.
  3. Next determine what you need to do in order to accomplish this task and write these in smaller, secondary circles or shapes that are attached to the large middle circle with lines.
  4. Keep adding ideas to the smaller shapes until you run out of ideas.

Do you have hope?

This is a question that I can honestly answer with a definite yes.  I named my dog Hope so I would always be reminded that I do have hope in my life.  Of course, even though I do HAVE Hope, I don’t always FEEL like I have hope.  Most days are good, but with all the violence and hatred in the world, it is sometimes hard to see any hope for the future.

Hope is a feeling that things will eventually turn out for the best.  It is an optimistic attitude that expects positive outcomes. We may be facing obstacles in our lives right now, but hope allows us to believe that we will get through the storm and see sunny skies ahead.

Hope is a powerful feeling and it is vital to having a good life.  Our circumstances may look bleak at times but we can look forward to greater things happening in our lives.  This requires having a positive attitude.  We have to look for the good instead of the bad.  It certainly isn’t hard to see the bad in the world; it is hiding in every corner.  Sometimes bad things happen to us but they don’t last forever.  We can expect good to come out of a bad situation.  Difficult situations can actually be good learning experiences as to what we should be doing or not doing in our lives.

Having hope gives people a better quality of life.  People with hope have recovered from serious illnesses and overcome stressful situations.  Hope gives people purpose and brings meaning to life.

Never lose hope.  Focus on what is positive in your life and work towards your goals.  Don’t let your struggles hold you back from finding happiness and peace in your life.  Always hope for the best and keep a positive attitude.

Stretch yourself

family stretchingIf you want to achieve something worthwhile in life, it is necessary to learn and take action.  This might be difficult and you might  have to do something that takes you out of your comfort zone.  It might require that you stretch your abilities and ‘reach for the stars’.

Try doing something every day that makes you stretch and move forward.  Think about some things that you may find a little difficult or that you have been pushing aside, then give it a try.  Be positive about the results and you might surprise yourself.  Here are some suggestions:

  • Express love to someone
  • Take a new risk
  • Try for a new achievement
  • Face a fear that holds you back
  • Share a secret with someone you trust
  • Make an apology
  • Set a new goal
  • Write a story, poem or song
  • Start a conversation with someone you don’t know
  • Start a project

Write your own list and start stretching yourself!  Most of us can do a lot more than we think we can.  Don’t let failure stop you.  If you aren’t successful, just learn from your mistakes and keep trying!

September is a month for change

people jumpingSeptember is the beginning of a new school year for many people.   Kindergarten, high school, college and university are the start of many new changes in our lives.

Some people start a new job in September, join a club or an interest group.  This is a time when you can make a fresh start or begin something new and exciting.

Many people go through life aimlessly, doing the same thing every day and never making any changes.  It’s like wanting to take a trip somewhere, but not making any plans, so you don’t really go anywhere.

If you want to be successful in life, it is important that you make definite plans or set goals.   Setting goals will give you a roadmap to success.

Step 1SELF-AWARENESS—Do an honest evaluation of your life, both past and present.  Determine the source of your problems and consider what changes need to be made.

Step 2—POSITIVE QUALITIES—Make a list of your positive qualities and start focusing on them by reading them everyday until  it becomes habit.

Step 3—POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS—Write down a few affirmations and put them where you can see them.  Start each day with a positive affirmation and repeat several times throughout the day.

Step 4—POSITIVE MATERIALS—Read inspirational books and listen to tapes, CD’s and DVD’s that will motivate you .   Do this every day and listen carefully to what the materials are telling you.

Step 5—POSITIVE PEOPLE—Surround yourself with positive, supportive people and go to places where you are accepted and uplifted.  Try to eliminate or reduce the time spent with negative people.

Step 6—SELF-ACCEPTANCEStop comparing yourself to others and trying to be like the unrealistic images of beauty sent out by the media.  Focus on your own unique strengths and abilities and give yourself praise for being the wonderful person you are.

Step 7—POSITIVE SELF-TALK—Be conscious of any negative thoughts and try to stop them from becoming negative words.  Try writing down your negative thoughts  in a daily journal and then re-word them into positive thoughts.

Step 8—SET REALISTIC GOALS—Determine what your goals are, write them down and work hard to achieve them.  Keep going even when you fail, learn from your mistakes and never give up.

Step 9—VOLUNTEER—Helping others will not only benefit the receiver, it will also benefit the giver.  Volunteering improves our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.

Step 10—ACTION—Listening  and learning will help get you started on your personal journey to find happiness and success in life.   Now it is time for you to take action and start working on making some positive changes.   People can help us, encourage us and support us, but we are the only ones who can change our lives.  So start right now and live the rest of your life POSITIVELY!!
