I sincerely believe that it is far more beneficial and far less costly to help a child build confidence than it is to fix an adult who has little or none.

The looney jar

on March 2, 2014

Negative thinking is something that many of us are caught up in.   People tend to have a negative mindset and too often this causes us to develop bad habits.  Negative thinking can destroy our esteem and destroy any possibility of happiness or success.   Our negative self-talk can make us believe that we are unworthy of anyone’s love, we are not able to do anything good and we can’t accomplish anything of value.

In order to change our negative thinking, we have to be AWARE that we are caught up in this bad habit and be WILLING to make some changes.   Making change is not easy.  It takes time, patience and COMMITTMENT.    We have to take daily ACTION.

When a negative thought pops into your mind, STOP yourself and try to think about something positive.  Just a few seconds to stop that negative thought can make a huge difference.   It might stop you from saying or doing something wrong or inappropriate.looney jar

When I was taking a computer course a few years ago, we had a teacher who was big on thinking positive.  He had a huge glass jar at the front of his class that always had coins in it.   At the beginning of the first class, he gave us a few rules that he expected us to follow.  One of these rules was that he didn’t like his students saying anything negative about themselves, so every time he heard a negative word used, we had to put a quarter in his jar.  Since I used to be very negative, I put a lot of quarters in that jar.  At the end of the class, he rolled the quarters and donated them to a charity.

You can use the same activity to try to stop your negative thinking.  Every time you have a negative thought, word or action put some money in a jar.   It can be a quarter or even a looney.  This is also a good activity for families and groups to work on and support each other.   When someone is caught doing a negative action, make sure you take it a step further and change this to a positive action so you can all create a positive habit.

Being positive is so much better than being negative.  Start your own looney jar today!

Great idea! It seems easier to think negative than positive these days.

Thanks. You’re right, it is hard to be positive in this negative world, but we need to keep trying!
