I sincerely believe that it is far more beneficial and far less costly to help a child build confidence than it is to fix an adult who has little or none.

Remembrance Day

Inflandersfieldslestweforget01.JPGToday was Remembrance Day in all  Commonwealth countries, a day to remember all the members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty since the First World War.

There have been numerous wars and battles in countries around the world for centuries, and we should all take some time to remember the thousands upon thousands of men and women who have died trying to bring freedom.

We should also be praying for peace in the world.  Here is one that was written by William Temple   (1881-1944).

Prayer For Peace Among Nations
O Almighty Godthe Father of all humanity,
turn, we pray, the hearts of all peoples and their rulers,
that by the power of your Holy Spirit
peace may be established among the nations
on the foundation of justice, righteousness and truth;
through him who was lifted up on the cross
to draw all people to himself,  your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Are you too busy?

people with clock facesSociety keeps pressuring us to do more with our time.  If we have spare time, there must be something wrong with us.  Many people literally try to kill themselves by adding more and more pressure to their lives, trying to do as much as they possibly can.  Stress-related illnesses are on the rise and people don’t seem to be slowing down.  There are only 24 hours in a day, but some people seem to have time to accomplish a lot, while others accomplish little or nothing.   It all depends on how well you organize your time.

Are you too busy doing things that are not really important?   Are you planning your time so it includes recreation and leisure time?  Do you spend time with your family and friends?

  • If you can’t spend some time every day with your family, you are too busy.
  • If you can’t spend some time every day with your spouse, you are too busy.
  • If you can’t spend some time every day with your children, you are too busy.
  • If you can’t spend some time every day with yourself, doing some alone time, you are too busy.

Make sure you aren’t too busy to spend time with your loved ones.  Time will not wait for you to catch up and you can never regain any lost time.  Spend it well!   The clock is ticking! Your life depends on it!

Empower your children

Grandparents posing with grandchildrenWhat does empower mean?  It means to give someone the power to do something, the ability or the right to control people or things.

Do you want to control your children or do you want them to learn how to control themselves?  When we try to control our children and make them do what we want them to do, we are forcing them to do our will and not allowing them to make choices.   This does not teach children how to be responsible adults and they will grow up unable to control their own lives.

We do have to set boundaries and discipline our children, but we need to make sure that we are teaching them how to make good decisions and allowing them to face the consequences of their actions.

Parents can empower their children by giving them a loving, secure environment to grow up in.  This can be done by being a good role model and influencing them in a positive way.

Empower your children with the following tools:

  • unconditional love
  • encouragement
  • discipline (not punishment)
  • understanding
  • empathy
  • trust
  • respect
  • support
  • kindness
  • security

Whatever they grow up to be, they are still our children, and the one most important of all the things we can give to them is unconditional love.  Not a love that depends on anything at all except that they are our children.  ~Rosaleen Dickson

Teach your children to say affirmations

Mother and Daughter Face To FaceAffirmations are a great way to help children develop confidence and build esteem.  They are powerful statements that create positive habits and help children focus on positive self-talk.   Start teaching your children to say positive affirmations when they are young.  Here are some ideas:

  • I am a nice person
  • I listen to what my mom and dad say to me
  • I like to help other people
  • I keep my room clean
  • I pick up my toys
  • I obey our family rules
  • I am nice to my friends
  • I always try my best
  • I help with the chores
  • I exercise every day
  • I eat healthy foods
  • I take the dog for a walk
  • I am polite
  • I try to stay calm

Don’t forget to say your own positive affirmations every day!

Who are you making that cup of coffee for?

cup-of-coffee-on-saucerIf your husband or wife asks you to make them a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate, do you take the time willingly and make it for them?  If you are sitting watching TV or reading a book, would you be bothered to get up and fulfill their request?  Or would you tell them to make it themselves?

Now let’s change the scene.   Let’s pretend that you were visiting a special person, someone of importance that you really admired and respected and they asked you to make them a cup of coffee, what would you do?    Would you tell them to make their own or would you jump up quickly and make it for them?

I’m sure if you were around someone who you consider to be very important, you would be more than happy to make them a coffee.  But what about your loved ones?  Aren’t they just as important or even more so?

Why do we often treat other people better than the ones we are closest to?  Do we take them for granted?  Of course we do.  I know I do.

So, who are you making that cup of coffee for?
