I sincerely believe that it is far more beneficial and far less costly to help a child build confidence than it is to fix an adult who has little or none.

Lies travel fast

on September 3, 2013

Slide2“Mark Twain said a lie can make its way halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to put its shoes on, and he was speaking long before the digital age,” says Karen Eltis, a law professor at the University of Ottawa. “Today, it’s even more of a problem.”

It seems that people are far more interested in talking or hearing about things that are exciting and interesting, even if they aren’t true.   Today with our modern technology, it is so easy to spread lies and vicious rumours.   Gossip is considered commonplace and many people don’t even consider it to be morally wrong.

Why do people tell lies?

  • to avoid punishment for doing something wrong – children will naturally lie to get out of trouble
  • to be popular and be part of a group
  • to avoid arguments and disagreements
  • to maintain good relationships
  • to look important by exaggerating their position or success
  • to avoid telling the truth
  • to please someone by telling them what they want to hear
  • they lack confidence and self-esteem
  • live in an environment that thrives on deception

It is important that we understand that once we tell a lie, it cannot be reversed and the result can be destructive.  We need to realize that our words have power and we should be careful with what we say.

We would not like other people to spread lies about ourselves and we should never say anything that isn’t true or repeat anything that we are not sure about.  I’ve been in this situation myself and it certainly is not funny or amusing.   Lies can destroy marriages, friendships, work situations and life in general.

A lie may take care of the present, but it has no future.  ~Author Unknown

Worse than telling a lie is spending the rest of your life staying true to a lie.  ~Robert Brault

A lie has speed, but truth has endurance.  ~Edgar J. Mohn

With lies you may get ahead in the world – but you can never go back.  ~Russian proverb

Every lie is two lies — the lie we tell others and the lie we tell ourselves to justify it. ~Robert Brault
