I sincerely believe that it is far more beneficial and far less costly to help a child build confidence than it is to fix an adult who has little or none.

Can you keep a secret?

on July 10, 2013

dogs gossipingIf someone tells you a secret, what do you do?  Do you keep it to yourself, respecting that person?  Or do you tell everyone you know?

People have a natural desire to share information and there is nothing wrong with this unless it is something personal and private about someone.   When a secret is passed along to other people, it becomes gossip and this can be very harmful.

Why do people spread harmful gossip?

  • to make themselves look important
  • they know something that other people don’t know
  • they want to hurt someone
  • they don’t think about what they are saying

We need to always be careful about what we are repeating to other people.  Is it something that we have been told in private and asked not to repeat?  Is it something that we heard from another person and we don’t know how true it is?

It is important that we don’t pass on any information that is wrong, that we don’t know all the facts about, or something that will hurt another person.  I’ve been on both ends of gossip and have been hurt very badly so I understand how wrong it is and I’m always very careful with my words now.

So my question is – Can you keep a secret?

I am able to keep a secret, if it’s something that is “troublesome” I have spoken to someone I trust to keep it in confidence….I can’t stand gossip…so hurtful.
