Why do you diet?

FEET ON SCALESMany people in the world are on some kind of diet to lose or gain weight.  Stats say that about 50% of the female population are on diets and many become addicted to a lifetime of dieting.   Billions of dollars are spent each year on weight loss products and services.

Why do people diet?  This can be for different reasons:

  • a desire to be healthy
  • the need to be fit for playing sports
  • getting back in shape after having a baby
  • a health issue
  • losing some weight after being ill or having surgery
  • peer pressure to look good
  • media pressure to be perfect
  • low esteem and poor body image

Who gains from dieting?  It isn’t the people who are dieting because almost 90% do not succeed.  The companies who sell products and services are the ones who gain from our dieting.  They are well aware of the fact that diets don’t work and are merely lining their pockets with our hard-earned money by promising success through quick and easy diet plans that will only result in failure.

How can we lose weight properly?  People need to realize that maintaining a healthy weight can not be bought or achieved instantly.   A proper diet takes time and effort.  WE MUST  BE PATIENT!  We do not gain weight in a few days or weeks and we CANNOT lose weight quickly.  In fact, losing weight fast can be very dangerous to our health.

Too often, dieting is the result of a more serious problem that isn’t addressed.  This could be the lack of control in certain areas of their lives and they will monitor their food intake as something they can control by overeating or undereating.

We need to understand why we are dieting and try to resolve any issues we may have that are causing us to diet.    It is important that don’t compare ourselves to other people and learn to accept our own body image.  This will help you build strong esteem and you will be able to maintain a healthy weight.

The best way to diet is to combine healthy foods with exercise, drink plenty of water and get sufficient sleep.

  • Never skip meals
  • Eat smaller portions, never supersize anything
  • Cut down fats and sugar
  • Eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains
  • Treat yourself to something you enjoy, but keep the portion small

Dieting does not have to be a constant battle if done properly.   Don’t lose the battle trying to take a shortcut.  Win the battle by taking your time.  Remember, patience is a virtue!
