imconfident

I sincerely believe that it is far more beneficial and far less costly to help a child build confidence than it is to fix an adult who has little or none.

Are you lonely?

on December 7, 2012

Most people have felt lonely at one time or another.  It’s okay to be lonely sometimes and it is a normal feeling.  There are situations in life that will cause us to feel lonely.  If we lose a loved one or live alone it can cause loneliness.  However if we stay lonely for an extended period of time, it can result in chronic loneliness which includes despair, hopelessness and depression.

Loneliness can be the result of being alone, but being alone is not the same thing as loneliness.   Many people are alone but they are not lonely.  Why do people feel lonely?

  • Children may feel lonely if they have no siblings or friends to play with.
  • Teens may feel lonely if they aren’t connected with anyone at school.
  • Adults may feel lonely if they don’t have a significant other person in their life.
  • Seniors may feel lonely if they have little interaction with others

People can even feel lonely when they are in a crowd of people.  It sounds crazy, but I know many people who have felt this way, including myself.

If you are feeling lonely most of the time, it is time to TAKE ACTION and make some changes in your life.  Don’t wait for someone to come and rescue you.  Start rescuing yourself.  Here are some ideas:

  1. Connect with other people.   Communities have organizations and groups that are available for any age – children, teens, adults and seniors.   Find one that you are interested in and get going.  If you have some type of disability or illness, there are people who can transport you to an activity.  If you are not able to get out, some organizations have people who can visit you right where you live.
  2. Visit your local library and read books that interest you or find out about courses that you can enrol in.  This is a good way to meet people who have the same interests as you do and people who might be just as lonely as you are.
  3. Do you like animals?  Adopt a pet.  Caring for an animal will take your mind off your loneliness.  Walking a dog is a great way to connect with people.  If you can’t have a dog or cat, how about a gerbil or fish.   Talk to them.
  4. Reconnect with some old friends or join a club and make some new ones.
  5. Volunteer for a local organization.  Even 1 day a week will help you feel better and it will make other people feel good too.
  6. Visit some churches and find one that is open and friendly.
  7. Start a new hobby or revisit one you had.
  8. If you are very lonely, you might need professional help.
